Evil Eye

The evil eye”mati as it called in Greece” is a curse believed to be cast by a malevolent glare, usually given to a person when they are unaware. The idea is that the gaze of someone who harbors feelings of envy or jealousy can bring misfortune upon the one who is seen — the one who “gets the evil eye.”

Greek people often safeguard themselves against bad fortune by keeping some form of “mati” or eyeball symbol in the form of bracelet, necklace or charm.
